Michael Chase Dickerson

Composer and musician, 2021

Michael Dickerson is an Alaskan composer whose primary creative interest is people’s relationship with place.

Michael began studying piano as a child with his father. He earned a B.A. in Music and Philosophy from Middlebury College in 2012 and an M.M. in Composition from the University of Northern Iowa in 2016. He is currently enrolled in the M.A.T. program in Elementary Education at the University of Alaska Southeast.

Michael’s stylistic influences vary by project. He responds to audiences and collaborating artists by working across disciplines and referencing the styles they know best. He relies on the compositional crafts acquired in academia and on the ear he honed as a jazz pianist and popular guitarist and vocalist at Mount McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge from 2017-2019.

He contributes to The Northern Culture Exchange as collaborating writer and editor of the Music Alaska blog. His novella, Rivers Through Green was included in the 2021 UAS Power and Privilege Symposium. His current musical projects include quintet premier and quartet performance at the MAMBO in Colombia and a concert of new instrumental music at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
